The Dane hit the ground running, breaking her opponent three times en route to 6-2 set victory. She surpassed the Australian in all elements of play and statistically was the clear favorite to win the final, having claimed more than 90 per cent of her matches after winning the first set.
But Stosur managed offer some stiff resistance. She improved her service return in the second set and made four breaks, which was enough to level things on court, 6-4.
The third set was a reminder of the second in terms of competitiveness, though with one exception – it was Wozniacki who was luckier in the crucial moments. Trailing 3-1, she made a 3-0 run and then stunned Stosur on her serve when a tie-break seemed almost inevitable – 7-5.
Neither player had gone past the second round in their previous appearances in Moscow.
Earlier in the tournament, world No. 10 Marion Bartoli's surprise second-round exit had ensured the number nine-ranked Australian would travel to the season-ending tour championships in Istanbul as first alternate.
The men's final later Sunday pits Italian second seed Andreas Seppi against fourth seed Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil, before an all-Russian women's doubles final.
